At least the tooth broke today and did not ruin an exquisite Mother’s Day dinner last night. Waiting to get into a dentist this afternoon. Fortunately my dental insurance is accepted at the dentist my son’s girlfriend goes to (and is herself going to today.) I wasn’t sure the insurance would be accepted being away from home on the opposite side of the country but it looks like it is. It wouldn’t have mattered. I am in a little pain when anything hits that side and tooth so if I have to pay out of pocket I would.
Always an adventure when I travel.

We're going back out in June. Sorry about the tooth, but now if I have a problem out there, I'll PM you for a referral.

Sorry to hear that. We were in NY last weekend for a bridal shower for one of our nieces. Everyone had to have tested, it was a small luncheon outside. The next day the future groom, who dropped by at the end, reported he had tested positive. The following day, our niece, his fiance, tested positive. Meanwhile, we had brunch with our youngest son and his (fantastic) girlfriend (we only pray future wife). Three days later, my wife tested positive. i haven't. We've been in different parts of the house since, and tomorrow, we come out of social distancing! Yeah!!! But meanwhile, our youngest son's fantastic girlfriend tested positive. And another niece, who had immediately after the shower flown west for her own very, very small wedding (only immediate family, party to follow this summer) tested positive, so the wedding had to be put off a week. But then her brother just tested positive (he wasn't at the shower or even in NY). They're going on with the wedding without him, and everyone's dejected. Today was picture day for our academic department. I told our department manager that I wasn't going to be there, because I was exposed. She told me that she wasn't going to be there because she had tested positive. The person we were supposed to have dinner with Thursday night canceled because he tested positive, which was okay with us, because by then my wife had tested positive and we were going to cancel anyway. So, no, we don't know anyone who's had Covid recently.

it's appalling. my step-mom tested positive two weeks ago, and she's had FOUR shots. She first had covid back in November of 2020, and I'm pretty sure she had another bout with it sometime last year. This is her THIRD time through this disease. Fortunately, she had almost no symptoms. I believe she got every case from a doctor's office. Her sister is suffering from Long Covid, having had it back in November of 2020.

I know more people who have tested positive for COVID in the last month than in the prior two years. Fortunately all of them have had minor symptoms. Mostly like a bad cold with a brief fever, if any.

That was the especially tough time, before anyone was boostered or boostered enough. There are still people getting long covid, but many, many fewer. Our oldest son has had it at least twice, despite his shots/boosters. Also not symptomatic.

I know more people who have tested positive for COVID in the last month than in the prior two years. Fortunately all of them have had minor symptoms. Mostly like a bad cold with a brief fever, if any. That is the benefit of the vaccines. They give our bodies a headstart against a speedster of a virus. With that headstart, our immune system can fight the pathogen and overcome it before it can wreak havoc. It is fundamentally a race at the cellular level. Catching Covid has likely happened to all of us, perhaps multiple times, and those infections are seeing a small spike. By analogy, vaccination fortifies our defenses against that attack at every level. The first perimeter might be thought of as the Test Positive level. Even if that line allows some of the enemy through, the next concentric battlement is whether we see symptoms. From there the invaders rarely succeed in scaling the castle walls to be bad enough to cause hospitalization, and The Keep of deepest danger is even more impenetrable unless special circumstances hinder our defensive forces. Rough count of the infections mentioned in this thread may well have included 2-3 obits before the vax and treatment options we now have at our easy disposal, still free to patients. Keep your armory well stocked my friends, and encourage the same for your loved ones.

Keep your armory well stocked my friends, and encourage the same for your loved ones. Absolutely and well said. I don't think either I or the wife have had it, but I can't swear. That is based on her being immunosuppressed but not having been sick (or out much) since the pandemic started. Since she has a chronic issue with post nasal / cough (Mayo was going to address it and then the pandemic started) I admit if she was a lucky one we might not know. Similarly, I have felt well, though I get nasal issues - mostly allergies - regularly, nothing suspicious. I have some co-morbidities, so I "think" I would have at least felt worse, but again, who knows. Generally, I limit exposure. Even though I am twice a day getting sodas at a convenience store and doing ordinary shopping and errands, I always mask indoors with a good mask. My nephew and sister-in-law were recently over a couple of times for meals, but they are also cautious, although it was more exposure than I personally care for, given the circumstances. Except when actually in our house eating or outdoors, both they and I wear masks when together, in a car, for example.

Wow, what stories. These new variants are so contagious. We are taking our students to Chicago tomorrow for two days, including a show and the symphony, and I'm really scared. Then graduation and endless parties. Then our son and grandson come for a visit. We leave for Vienna on May 22. And I just want to lock myself in the house. But won't work....

All sounds like so much fun. Color me very bright green with envy. But I hope your plane ticket and European schedule are flexible. Honestly, you have to prepare for the reasonable possibility that you'll need to postpone.... We're supposed to fly to California in June for a wedding and family visit, and spent a lot more than we wanted to make sure that we could reschedule everything if necessary. Effectively, it's the new higher cost of flight insurance.

Hi all. Been a little pre-occupied. Today my best furry friend Magic (11yr. old australian shepherd ) had surgery to repair an anterior cruciate ligament tear. At least no complications. We have a long and careful healing process ahead. Hope everyone is doing well.

Wow. I have been laying low, recuperating from oral surgery (crown snapped off and now I need an implant...yikes). Also being annoyed by the temp denture that I will be wearing for 6 months until that whole implant procedure is complete. Dang thing makes me lisp. But I am not inclined to go out of the house without it, as it is one of my upper front teeth (sigh). We're going to Maine for five days soon, as I am packing extra masks just in case, between the variant and being dentally challenged. (sometimes it's GOT to come out for a while, ya know..) Also thinking about getting that SECOND booster soon.
Sorry to hear so many stories from you all about virus, travel weirdness, pet surgeries, dental challenges, etc. I guess we all have to be flexible and alert at all times to cope with the every changing situations we find ourselves in.
Hope you all travel safely and encounter few issues!!! Stay well, all.

I'm an avid scuba diver so went on my vacation anyway with a removable temp. I had to remove it to eat and dive with regulator in mouth. I became the comedy of the dive boat as people wanted pics of me front tooth missing. Had a great time. Being able to laugh about yourself helps. Get the booster. I'm ready for my second booster. I still wear a mask.

Not to be a Debbie Downer, but Maine is currently the Covid capital of the U.S. I don't know why. But check out the map in today's NY Times. Definitely consider getting that 2nd booster.... In the story I tell above, my wife's sister was exposed exactly as my wife was, but she had already got her 2nd booster (we hadn't: we were trying to time it for our June trip to California, as it only has a 2 months' efficacy), and she didn't get Covid, while my wife did.

Has anyone got Covid these days. My brother just got it from an unvaxxed geezer who lives near our farm. You can't win. He was trying to help the guy out because he was feeling sick. Yep finally got me some Covids. Didn't feel well yesterday morning. Tested positive. Not feeling too bad. Achy yesterday, no so much today. More coughing today and a little congested.
On the other hand, I "have" to work from home for like 2 weeks. Always a silver lining.

For most people without complicating health factors, the main challenge is the "inconvenience" is isolation.

I still wear a mask. I'm missing my 2 front top teeth (and a lot not in the front). I've had a partial denture for a while, no issue, but I need to get a new one as I now no longer have any teeth on the top or bottom back right. The partial is the front 2 and top left. I agree it was difficult missing front teeth before I got a working partial, luckily, I wasn't working and just usually let folks see me without. Still glad to have gotten it. Dental issues are the worst, although at the moment my only issue is a chip in an incisor, I ground my teeth reading an idiot in the paper and the tip chipped.

Wow, all these stories of Covid positives really makes me wonder about things out here in New Mexico where almost everyone (not me) is going maskless indoors. The biggest story here has been the wildfires just west of Los Alamos, and east of Santa Fe, threatening Las Vegas, NM. Not much on the local front page about the virus. We have a family birthday party on Saturday at my nephew’s home. I’m planning to wear a mask indoors but head directly for my nephew’s deck in the backyard. Have had my second booster. Stay well everyone.

Two months is average for natural immunity after infection. Vaccine boosters are lasting 5-8 months in the literature I read, that's why the CDC authorized dose four after four months, to be ahead of that gap. When I got my second boost, the provider said, "See you in the fall."

Two months is average for natural immunity after infection. Vaccine boosters are lasting 5-8 months in the literature I read, that's why the CDC authorized dose four after four months, to be ahead of that gap. When I got my second boost, the provider said, "See you in the fall." Interesting swash. I didn't know that and I'm under a very different impression, which is: Studies now show that the first booster gave excellent protection against getting Covid of any severity for around 4 months; the second booster for only around 2 months. Both significantly mitigate severity of Covid once infected for around 6 months. The 2nd booster is being called the "events" booster. Its efficacy peaks during the first 2 months. So people get it to time for important events they don't want to miss. While it still works well to prevent major illness after 2 months, it's far less effective at preventing any Covid infection, and, for those of us who are in the workplace or travel, etc., getting even mild Covid has consequences. I know plenty of people who have had the 2nd booster who later contracted Covid. But I don't know any who got really sick after the 2nd booster (and, alas, I know of at least 3 people who have died of Covid who were vaxxed but not boostered). Protection against mild COVID increases to about 65% to 70% following a booster dose but drops to 45% to 50% after about two months, according to a report from the UK released in January. Protection against severe COVID lasts much longer. After a booster, protection against hospitalization stands at 92% and remains high at 83% two months later.www.buzzfeednews.com/article/katiecamero/how-long-after-covid-booster-is-it-effective

For most people without complicating health factors, the main challenge is the "inconvenience" is isolation. Well I do have heart issues, and I'm a bit older, and I'm fat as $#%. So I do have some health factors. Main reason I got the vaccines and booster.
Actually this is kind of going very similar to "something" I had in Feb 2020, before anything really started. Interesting. To me anyway.
