I was really, really impressed by Williams. I don’t recall feeling the same way in the first game. I think there are two reasons. First, her performance in the first game felt like a one-off performance. Most players have one game where they put it all-together, and maybe that was the game. Second, I was playing more attention to UConn.
This game, maybe because Williams had some jaw-dropping performances early on, I paid more attention to her. Which wasn’t hard, because if you were even half-watching the game, she was front and center a lot of the time. I’ve seen players score a lot of points against UConn and you had the impression that their shot was on for that game. It was more than that for Williams. She didn’t simply happen to get a few open shots, she made herself open, and if she couldn't get open, she hit it anyway.
I just glanced at DD’s stats summary versus Loyd, whom I think is a tremendous player. Williams has more steals, more blocks, more assists, more rebounds, and more points. Why isn’t she in the national POY discussion?
