Analysts like Rebecca and Lawson favor Jewell Loyd as the winner of the POY over Stewart. After the SC game both Doris and Dave O'Brien said they think Stewart locked it up (big game on biggest stage). Loyd started the season on fire but her shooting % has dropped as the season has progressed. Loyd averages more points per game than Breanna but also takes more shots. Stewart is taking fewer shot this year but her shooting % and FT % are the best for her career and she's on track to record her best seasons in assists and steals. I really don't have strong feelings one way or the other. I think Muffet's head might explode if Loyd doesn't win the award and we don't need more of that nonsense at this year's FF.
Here are the numbers for each player:
Loyd (26 games)
PPG: 20.7 FG%: .466 3FG%: .333 REBs: 5.2 Assists: 87 (3.3) TOs: 61 Steals: 43 Blocks: 14
Stewart: (25 games)
PPG: 16.2 FG%: .518 3FG% .309 REBs: 6.6 Assists: 77 (3.1) TOs: 48 Steals: 42 Blocks: 55

They are close, very close.
Cat, are there any dark horses? With the way Moriah is playing, is it possible that she may be in the mix?

Do you have minutes handy? It might be nice to look at points per minute. My guess is that Stewart is sitting more, because of large leads.

I think Lobo favors Loyd, partly due to careful avoidance of a UConn bias.
I think Loyd will be helped by a perception that UConn is likely to get and has gotten a lot of awards, and wouldn't it be nice to spread them around? Loyd is a tremendous talent, but Stewie alreay has some major awards. I'm not calling this fair, jus' sayin'
Loyd will also be helped (if my supposition is correct) that voters like raw point totals over shooting percentage.
She will also get the benefit of the fact that she gets her points against a somewhat better schedule. Stewie is hurt by having fewer minutes, but helped by having weaker opposition.

Thanks. Closer than I might have guessed. It means Loyd is averaging slightly more points per minutes. 27 versus 24 per 40 minute game.

Stewart has played 668 minutes (26.7), and scores .59 pts/min. Loyd has played 788 minutes (30.3), and scores .68 pts/min.

Too bad we have no more signature games for Stewie. If we did, no contest.

I could easily see them splitting the 4 awards.

Two stats jump out at me.... Loyd has taken 395 shots, Stewie just 301... One is a shooter, the other more "team oriented"...(yes, Stewie has more "team" to be oriented towards..) Want more proof? Assists = Loyd w/ 87, so she takes 4.54 shots per assist... Stewie w/ 77, so 3.91 shots per assist... If only Stewie was selfish..!

Comment from Rob Clough's ND - Duke game report:
Jewell Loyd, Notre Dame: 21 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals, 5-6 3FG. The best player in the country did what she does: make shots when her team needed her.

I think Rob's ACC bias may be showing....
Why not say 'one of the best' players in the country?

What a joke!! No one would pick Jewell over Breanna in a draft. Including Rebecca!

What a joke!! No one would pick Jewell over Breanna in a draft. Including Rebecca! You're absolutely right... would anyone actually draft Loyd over Stewart even if required to base the decision solely upon this season? And yes, I know... some teams need frontcourt help and some need backcourt help, but who in their right mind would actually pass on Stewart. And besides our little national treasure at ND can't even spell Jewel Lloyd correctly.... What's up with that? Geez, now I find myself questioning her long division skills. AF

The level of competition was different, but I think Stewie was better tonight than Jewell was last night.

How conveniently they ignore her blocks and shot alterations. Pheh to this false equivalency. For the record: I love JL's game. She jumps almost as high as Gabby but is not quite as powerful;). Yes: (4 u Sarcasm Is Served All Day. They are both honored to be inheritors of The Tweety Nolan School.

Stewie is the best player in WCBB and is unstoppable. Lloyd is not. Geno needs to keep her in games to get her numbers up and she will win NPOY or at least share it with Lloyd. Lloyd started the season like a lion. Stewie didn't. Now its a race and I do believe Stewie will out shine Lloyd by the end of the season.

The drumbeats get louder... From Mechelle Voepel's feature article on Jewel Loyd: "You know her as the frontrunner for national player of the year. But Jewell Loyd is also a film, television and theater major ..."

Muffet can not speak Loyd's name in a post-game pc without saying "she's the best player in the country." She's been campaigning all season which is her right to do.
Loyd is the pick of both Lawson and Lobo so I guess that accounts for her front-runner status. Honestly, I don't have strong feelings one way or the other. Both Loyd and Stewart are deserving so I'm okay with Loyd winning. Stewart has another goal in mind. I know Geno won't throw a fit if Loyd wins.

Another reason Stewart should win. Less of a chance of misspelling the name on the trophy.
