I'm probably going to spend time in purgatory for my attitude towards Coach VanDerveer, but I will literally bleed blue for my Huskies.
UCONN is my alma mater, and I cannot apologize for being a real jackazz about it.
BTW, Phil, I appreciate your taking the time, energy and thought to respond to my rant. Every point you made was good. I have no problem with people disagreeing with my rant, especially not someone who does it so well. Thank you for providing a well reasoned response.

Hey Phil, the stuff I wrote about was almost 30(!!) Years Ago! Can I carry a grudge!?
I thoroughly enjoyed reading the Wikipedia on Coach V. However much is still yours, great job!

Hey Phil. I do wear blue tinted specs. Freely admit that. And I agree that Rebecca really was only on the team for PR. She was also a great player, and a classy person, especially for one so young. Tara was fully formed adult who acted like a spoiled brat in that situation. To put a younger person who is in your care thru the hell she put Rebecca thru is unconscionable. Rebecca was treated so badly, there were reports of her calling Geno, sobbing. No matter what she did, it was wrong as far as VanDerveer was concerned. Thanks to her belittling Rebecca, from what I recall, the rest of the team basically shunned her. How mature is that??? It took Years for Tara to admit and acknowledge Geno as a good coach. Thankfully others acknowledge his greatness, for example Dawn Staley. Petty and narcissistic. VanDerveer will never admit that she handled the situation badly. What hammers it home to me is how gracious Rebecca is on air regarding VanDerveer. I think you flat out nailed it!!! I feel the same way about her. As for the wins record, I don't agree that D2 wins should be included. The media has declared this and the NCAA went along with it, best I can tell. But, for me, she has 42 less wins. Also, did she get credit for their wins when she was away coaching the Olympic team? It seems like it and that is wrong too. For me, she will always be Tara the Terrible for how Rebecca was treated.

For me, she will always be Tara the Terrible for how Rebecca was treated. 1 - she did not get credit for the wins when she was coaching the Olympics. Someone posted that they saw them included in a list but the numbers were not included in the total. She was not credited with those wins, they were jointly credited to Marianne Stanley and Amy Tucker, who co-coached the team.. 2 - All NCAA coaches get credit for their wins under AIAW, Div I, Div II and Div III. A number of Pat's wins were under AIAW, Vivian, all the rest of long time coaches. Any who coached before 1980, so Tara's games at Idaho were also under AIAW, late '70s. I don't know why you think the "media" have declared it. This has been the case since I started following Women's Basketball and tracking coaches in 1995. Do you seriously think that someone in 1995 said we have to game the system so that someday Tara can get the most wins? I mean really. I don't happen to dislike Tara, but agree she did not treat Lobo as part of the team, which was wrong. I consider her a cold fish, who basically does what she thinks is best for winning regardless of folks feelings. That said, many of her players did like her.

I don't recall records being discussed like this one was. Maybe Summitt got this much press when she broke the women's win record but I, personally, didn't dig into it like I did this one because everyone made such a big deal about Tara. So, no, I don't think anyone "gamed the system" in 1995 nor did I imply that. I still think those 42 wins shouldn't be included but, clearly, that is just me. I did verify that the win total does not include the 95/96 season. I was thrown by the fact that the Wiki page shows that season in the table but the total doesn't include those wins. My bad. Someone should probably remove that season from the table.

Why does it matter? Geno will likely break the record before the calendar turns to 2025. It will all be moot then.

Win #4 sets the record next year for Geno. Super that Paige will be part of it. That will be awesome. Thinking UConn will make it special. I was at Mohegan Sun for his 1000th and they gave fans some cool swag. The rumors of Tara’s retirement have been ripe for a year as the 3 freshmen portalled. Yet Geno kept saying he’d never get the career record. Strange. I could never understand Geno's statement regarding most wins, except that he just wanted to avoid it. I think it was easier and more diplomatic to just disregard it.

Someone should probably remove that season from the table. Good point. Interestingly the Wikipedia article on the Stanford Cardinal basketball team handles it better, separating out the 95-96 when Tucker and Stanley acted as head coach. Unfortunately is not as simple as copying over the relevant table from the basketball page to the VanDerveer page as the styles are different. In addition, neither the totals on the basketball page of the totals on the VanDerveer page match the reported record of 1216 wins so I've got some homework to do.

If the rumors at the time about the bad blood between TV and GA are true then Auriemma was the one at fault. If TV actually did take it out on Lobo then she was in the wrong.

But I literally do not remember a time when she didn't have the most wins while she was active. She started coaching as early as almost anyone that coached into the modern era, and she won - a lot. For many years, the second winningest coach was Jody Conradt, and a quick glance reveals she was about 40 or so behind Pat when she retired. So I have no idea when Pat moved into first place, but I am pretty sure it was many years ago.

Very soon all of our very special WCBB special friends at ESPN will have to acknowledge Geno as the greatest WCBB coach ever. I'm sure they will all grovel while doing it. I'm hoping Uconn is smashing opponents while it happens. I'm sure they will go out of their way to speak about Tara anyway.

I've fixed the Tara Vanderveer page.
It took me a while because the reported record for 2015 – 16 was 28 – 8 which matched what was on the Stanford website but I confirmed with the athletic department that it was an error.
The totals on the page excluded the 95 – 96 year but it wasn't laid out properly, I've taken a stab at improving it.

This isn't about the wins record, it's about promoting females in sports. The media ignored the DII wins and the NAIA wins with regards to Tara but someone will point out that Geno coached his entire career in a lesser conference than both Tara and Pat.
