The story about Diana and the zone defense in the 2010 world championship game vs Czech Rep is hilarious.
Covers a wide range of topics, including deflategate! I guess he didn't appreciate Lin Dunn saying UConn is bad for the game a couple of years ago.
Blames himself for the loss to ND in 2001, has a few choice words for some uconn fans, doesn't back away from his opinion of men's college basketball, loves the way the SA Spurs play, thinks the lack of support for women's team sports is because the public is sexist (calls out women not supporting women's team sports), etc.
Great interview by a guy who is an unapologetic fans of UConn WBB.

Cat, you posted this on TOB -
A few good rants, one directed at UConn fans which I'm sure will cause the usual suspects to get their panties all twisted. He refers to some UConn fans as so "g-d stupid it's unbelievable." He's referring to the fans who complain about blow-outs and then complain when they dare lose a game, e.g., Stanford. Maybe Geno read the ridiculous posts after the Stanford loss.
I remember speaking with Geno at The Travelers Pro-am and when I mentioned TOB, he said with wide eyes "those folks are idiots". I did post that on TOB and I think Eric was just as insulted.

I did post that on TOB and I think Eric was just as insulted. I knew I'd get a few responses like Eric's. Honestly, I don't have a problem with what Geno said. He said "some" fans and I'm sure he sees quite a lot of dumb stuff in the emails he receives from fans. Some of the stuff posted on Area 51 after the Stanford loss was awful. Just awful stuff about a team and coach that have given UConn fans more joy than any fans should come to expect from a sports team. Although I do still post there (mostly because this board has too little traffic) I've felt differently about that place ever since. Some fans like to pick and choose what they want Geno to be honest about. Doesn't work that way.

I found Geno on DT and the WNBA players on the Nat'l Team fascinating. Don't give them options to create - it won't work, give them rote plays- give each play a name, that's what they are use to. And then Geno stuck the knife in - that's why the WNBA isn't that much fun to watch. Very obvious that Geno's and DT's mutual admiration society is still going strong.

I agree, it was fascinating, and troubling, to think that Geno's offense doesn't work well at that level. I guess if you have come up through a system with mostly rote plays, it may not be the right time (two weeks with the National team) to introduce plays where you have to think, but it is something I hadn't heard before.

I do hope that DT comes on board here as an asst coach; her bball acumen is astounding. I think she would be a great coach. Sad that the "greatest women's BB player" has D and Maya in one of the brackets together.

I doubt there is enough time left in Geno's career for DT to come on board after her playing days and have enough experience by the time Geno steps down. Though I do want her in the mix to replace Geno, I read or saw an interview last winter where she said she saw at least another 5 years in her career.

Geno will coach for at least 10 more years. You read it first here. (not really, as far as the read it first). It's just what I think.

After rewatching the Texas game, I was struck with how selective our memories can be. Diana played great. But she missed several free throws and shots that could have been crucial. Because UConn ended up winning, we all remember her overall performance. Yet so often players are criticized for "choking" in similar situations when their team loses.

Well, then, you would have to put Geno in that selective memory column too! She was spectacular in leading that young bunch - 23 or 26 points? Huge passing in key moments. Clutch 3s to drag them back. She rallied those kids like a coach on the court. Yes, she missed some free throws and a couple of shots late, but also delivered late. Then there was sleepy head Wilnett, UConn's Rip Van Winkle who only woke up for a few games a year!

Then there was the picture that was worth a thousand words, when Jamie Carey, beaten on a screen threw herself a two UConn players and tried a flop, holding her head, looking like Joan of Arc as only she could. She landed practically a Geno's feet and the camera turned to him, his arms crossed, with his eyes cast down on Carey and a look of total distain on his face!

She got them further in the tourney than anyone ever thought they could go. Had they lost that game, dissing Diana for those missed shots would have been nothing short of criminal. welcome to TOB, cause that's what they do. They have to find a reason, someone to blame because they didn't get their way, their bragging rights, cause their team had the nerve to disappoint them and lose a game. It is no small wonder that Geno thinks that some of those fans are [mod edit]. Those are the kinds of fans I would rather not be around AND, defending the players and trying to explain to said fans how things really are gets you in trouble over there. This is why I am here. I am hoping that objectivity trumps hysteria on this board.

How sad that's your takeaway from that game. I was at that game and what Diana, Wilnet, et al did to win the game was remarkable. Great players are allowed to miss some shots.

You can, as a coach (and fan) hold a player responsible for preparation, focus, hustle, and execution of the offensive and defensive sets, but you can't have an expectation that all shots are going to drop. No one bats 1.000. No one makes 100% of her shots.
These players are human, which implies imperfections in eye/hand and gross and fine motor functions, and we are most fortunate to follow a team that currently has and has had players that perform at a level, that while perfectly imperfect, is a cut above their rivals.
How lucky for us.

Okay, obviously I wasn't clear. No question DT is a great clutch player! It wasn't a diss on her at all.( I did say she played great) It was more about how we tend to remember things as pretty near perfect when the end result is positive. And a reminder that we are all human and EVEN DT misses shots that could have cost the game.(exhaustion!) It bugs me when other players are criticized for "choking" when they miss key shots near the end of a game. Really, go to TOB? And some wonder why this board is so quiet...

I guess several of us misinterpreted part of what you were saying. Mea culpa. As far as idealizing memories, yeah we tend to do that, but as far as UConn WCBB memories go, I try to avoid that, because the reality is far more rewarding than an idealized memory. Yeah, DT was tired. Texas was a very physical team and got away with quite a bit, though ended up in the penalty situation - with DT, Wilnett and Maria missing free throws!! Those DT 2 misses in a row, very tired throws - but that just made her play around them the more amazing as was the play of Wilnett throwing herself on the floor chasing an errant ball and outrebounding Stephens again and again. Great stuff.

I guess your post was kinda related to how they post on TOB, but not one told you to post elsewhere. I hope you stick around.

ESPN does it again. Takes one of Geno's quotes from the interview, never provides context, changes his quote and then gets Mechelle Voepel to make a bunch of silly statements on twitter that has very little to do with the interview.
What quote am I talking about? The one in which Geno talked about some UConn fans being so g-d stupid it's unbelievable. ESPN proceeds to change the quote (to make it even more controversial) and that's the sum total of its coverage of what is really a terrific interview. This is ESPN at its worst, and Voepel doesn't help matters.
I can understand some fans not liking the quote, but that shouldn't be the sum total of what you take out of that interview. Yet, that's what ESPN and Voepel have done. Not surprising but disappointing nonetheless.
