Stewie on the quest for 4: “No one wants to see us do this besides us, and with that it brings out the competitive fire in all of us. We want to prove everyone wrong and show everyone that whether you want us to do it or not, we’re going to do it.” snyuconn.com/uconn/stewart-ready-to-get-back-to-business/I do wonder whether the pressures of the journey will tighten them up in any close contest.

But will anyone have the firepower to give them a real game? Seriously doubt it.

Whenever I read these interviews I get the impression that the players are repeating things they have heard from the coaching staff. And if anyone is feeling the pressure not to screw up it has to be the coaches. They can make NCAA history with a 4th straight NC. They have more than enough talent. Many of their fans and the media are taking another NC for granted. Anything less than that will be considered a massive failure. Add in the pressure that will be added if the Huskies go into the NCAA's undefeated.
I am reminded of Baylor in Griner's last year. After going undefeated the previous year and then mowing through their opponents in 2012, they went to the NCAA's feeling invincible. Now I don't think Geno will let that happen but sometimes the hardest thing to do is to keep working to get better when there doesn't appear to be a need for it. And yeah, I am aware that we all assume Geno won't let that happen. But remember, this is a team that could easily have the top 3 picks in next year's draft. That happened in 2002, but that team was coming off a year in which they didn't win a championship and they had something to prove. The only player on this team who has experienced not winning a NC is Butler.
The coaches have their work cut out for them. One thing this team does have going for it is the competitive nature of the freshmen. If they can push the starters in the competition for playing time it make keep the team from becoming complacent.

I just don't see this team being complacent in any way, shape or form. The reason I feel that way is one player and one player only. Yes, there will be multiple scoring options. Break shooters, passers, rebounders. The most talent in WCBB.
But when the disease is being complacent, Moriah Jefferson is the antidote.
There is no way she will let any player take a play off. It's not only Stewart going for a fourth championship.

Complacency is not my concern. I hope the goofs, Gabby and Kia, can keep things light when they aren't getting down to business.

DD is right about Moriah abut I am really looking to see her backcourt teammate Kia Nurse take a leadership role from what she did this year qualifying for the Olympics and being the primary scorer for team Canada.

I listened to this podcast today and there were a couple of things said that seem to relate to what I said. espn.go.com/espnradio/grantland/player?id=13762679 (A great Geno interview BTW) Geno mentioned that in 2001 the team was so deep with talent that he ended up playing 10 and that it may have kept the top 8 from developing the sort of cohesiveness he wanted. I think he is facing a similar situation this year. The other thing he said concerning the 2001 team was what happened early in the season when they played Georgia in the first game of the season. Georgia was ranked 3rd in the country. They won by 29 but had a such a huge lead in the first half that Geno turned to one of his assistants and said that he didn't know how they were going to keep the team focussed when they were playing their walk-ons in the first half.

That Zach Lowe interview is terrific and really deserves its own thread. So many topics were touched on. Geno really is an interesting guy.

One of my favorite UCONN games evah.

I hope that Georgia game is on YouTube. I know about it, but I've never seen it.
On another note, some commentator thinks ND will give UConn a game, even without Loyd. Don't remember who.

I'm going to go look for that Ga game. Like you I have never seen it. Will post link if I find it. On Notre Dame, some expect Turner to have a big sophomore leap and naively expect 5th year Madison Cable to be far more productive than she can be, and look to freshman guard Ali Patberg to break the starting line up and be a whiz bang (who knows, by the end of the year she may be). The ACC is a paper tiger and I expect ND to run through them again. Well there it is:
