Okay, I watched team USA versus Hungary. For the record, I think Hungary is a worse team than Canada.
But the US looked sharp on defense in this game. And that is a good platform for doing well in a competition like this imo.
The US was pretty successful with some back cutting action in this game. Got lots of uncontested layups.
One thing I love about Van Lith is her intensity. She was really locked in for this one.
Papp for Hungary was a pretty solid player. Did some good things in this match.
Harper has been solid for the United States. The most reliable player on the court for the first two games.
Oh it was Papp that got hammered by Van Lith in the final minute.
I didn’t really notice Burdick in this game.
Tomorrow’s games are Mongolia and the Czech Republic. The Czech Republic figures to be the harder match. (They beat Canada.)

Players like Haley Jones are a dime a dozen in the WNBA. The fault for her not developing as a shooter and that she won't be a factor in the league lies with Jones not Stanford. She had plenty of time in 3-4 years to hook up with a quality shooting instructor during offseasons but didn't bother. There are players who develop their shooting after they go pro like Gabby Williams because their job depends on it but if Jones' priority is to continue to work on her hairstyle at the expense of her job, she'll be finding another job fairly soon. "This offseason, she went to rehab for her knee injury four times a week, worked on her shot and ball handling with Packie" [Turner: a highly acclaimed shooting and ballhandling coach]

To prepare, Jones spent the offseason working on her dribbling and perimeter shooting. She trained with skills coach Packie Turner, who has helped other high-profile court creators like Stephen Curry and Sabrina Ionescu.
www.si.com/college/2022/11/18/stanford-womens-basketball-haley-jones-happiness-professorIf Packie Turner is as good as advertised, that's not a good sign for Jones. She still has the same disjointed, two piece lunge shot she had coming out of HS. Maybe she is another Ben Simmons.

I don’t envision Brink as someone that can take over a game on the offensive end. And I think that is a real shame because the potential is off the charts. Maybe it is not too late, but that part of her game will have to be developed professionally. It won’t happen at Stanford. The same way Stanford could not help Haley Jones with her three point shooting.Players like Haley Jones are a dime a dozen in the WNBA. 1/1 from 3 means she can shoot the three now? Come on.
The truth is everything else is there if she can learn how to shoot. And if she learns how to shoot, it means a pro coach taught her what a Stanford coach could not. Which was my whole point yesterday. (My point basically being Brink and Jones would be better pros if they went to UConn.)

I wonder how long it will be before you try to bring your icon joke to this thread. It has crashed and burned in 4-5 threads already. Maybe thread 6 will be the charm?

Eh, whatever. You are confusing me for Aubreyfan if you are chasing me into every thread with that icon joke.
You were quick to point out that i don't follow instructions in the "Which NEW player are you most looking forward to see play?" thread. But I actually can't remember the last time you posted in a thread without trolling. Do you have any thoughts about this 3x3 tournament? Or you don't care because no UConn players are participating?

Sounds like this is spin based on what I am reading in this thread. Van Lith was getting star treatment before she entered college but her size has reduced her effectiveness at the higher level. Hard to tell on these videos but I got the impression she dragged the back foot a few times and got away with it. She is fun to watch. Why did she leave L ville?

USA women didn’t play today. So, I haven’t paid as much attention. Games against Mongolia and the Czech Republic tomorrow.

Well, she only left Walz Kingdom to be closer to Ma & Pa...... ......oh,that's right; LSU is even further from home.....?? We can rule out LSU academics for sure..... ......must be the bayou Tik Tok culture?

Who won? It was cut at the end. The US won both of their games earlier today.

I have not been able to watch yet, that will have to wait until I get home from work.
I did see that the US advanced to the knockout round. I think the tie breaker must be point differential. So Czech Republic’s big loss to the Americans really hurt them.
The results are a bit of a surprise. Because on paper, Mongolia figured to be the easier of the two games today. And that is not what happened.
Also, looking at the box scores. It looks like Brink and Van Lith really stepped up and carried the team. Good for them. 👍

Canada won the group. Team USA is second. And they will play third place in group B next. Looks like either Egypt or Japan.

I have not mentioned this yet. But I hate the FIBA 3x3 basketball. Yellow and blue? No thanks.
Well I watched USA versus Mongolia. A 21-18 victory for team USA. This is a surprisingly close result. Mongolia lost every match at this tournament. 0-4 record.
USA could have easily lost this one too. They trailed for the first seven minutes. And they trailed by as many as six.
I think USA was just extremely lethargic. Gave up a lot of points quickly.
Van Lith was the star in this one. She can’t buy a shot behind the arc. But she was really aggressive here. Got to the hoop with a lot of regularity. Scored 11 of the team’s 21 points.
I think free throws were a big issue for Mongolia in this game. 7-0 in favor of the US. And Mongolia was in foul trouble quickly.
Harper and Burdick were very quiet. But they never really hurt the team. It was just a passive lethargic performance from the two of them.
Cameron Brinks skills and deficiencies are on full display at this event. Bothered Mongolia on the defensive end. Missed a couple of easy scores after taking contact again. One possession annoyed me because she got knocked down twice in quick succession. She needs to be stronger at the pro level. I definitely like her more as a defender than as an offensive player.
Mongolia missed a ton of shots behind the arc. And they mostly missed badly.
I think USA must have played much better in the game against the Czech Republic and I am looking forward to watching it.
