Because of the Covid year exemption (Paige’s freshman year) and injury years, and if as expected Jana Paige and Ice don’t play this year, next year none of our 14 will be in their last year of eligibility. Not saying they all will or should stay, but including next year Aubrey Aaliyah Nika Azzi Caroline Amari will have two years, Paige Ines Ayanna will have 3 years, and Ice Jana Ashlynn KK and Qadence will have 4 years. With a 15 scholarship limit, Paige and Azzi could go off scholarship with their nil earnings after next season while Paige pleases her mother by earning her PhD!

While it is fun to think about, but I sincerely doubt Aaliyah, Paige, Nika, will stay beyond next year. They are too team oriented to stay and take playing time away from the younger players - especially those who do not qualify for the covid exemption.
The rest of the injured who lost a lot of time or full seasons may opt to stay given the opportunity. But the roster size, if AE, Paige and Nika were to stay, will be difficult to manage. Next year will be a challenge with 14 - especially if they are all healthy.
I am focused on this year. The future will be written when the time comes.

I'm just hoping for a relatively healthy next season. Lou and Dorka will likely both be playing in the WNBA and UConn will add KK Arnold, Ashlynn Shade and Qadence Samuels. Without too many major injuries, we'll be at least a Final Four team. Jana will have the experience of practicing with the team for about 2 months of this season, ICE will be healed, Aaliyah will be even better....... .....if Aaliyah continues her trajectory, she'll be one of the first 2024 WNBA Draft selections along with Paige.

A South Carolina donor guarantees each player $25k/year in NIL. That's a baseline that he supplies You're free to make more. When you add room and board, built-in amenities, a great social environment, free education, etc. it's actually not unthinkable that some might choose an extra year (if eligible) over even a WNBA year.

With the WNBA rookie salaries being in the $60-70K range, getting a free year towards grad school is a good option for those so inclined. Of course, they could also perhaps make $100-200K overseas? For someone who's had an outstanding senior season and who'll likely have a good first year in the WNBA; overseas pay can be perhaps double that.

There will definitely be some players that leave after next year. I am keeping myself prepared for a Nika or Aubrey surprise this summer. It could happen. And if it does, I still like what we have. And we will have a great chance to be one of the best teams in the country again.

And we will have a great chance to be one of the best teams in the country again. My money's on Aubrey staying at least through next year (she has even the following year's eligibility). Even though her minutes might be more limited: 1. education is important to her parents; 2. Aubrey has enormous potential. Where she needs improvement is in the half court game, creating opportunities for herself to take the short jumper and establishing her 3, and then driving off her defender. If she develops that further and uses it consistently, she will be a great pro. Hoping she works on that over the summer and comes back to dominate. Nika might go either way, but if she does have pro aspirations, she really must demonstrate her offense more consistently. She's got it, but practice makes perfect.

Will Nika and Aubrey both be 22 this summer? If not, they can't go early unless they go to overseas. Pretty sure you have to be 22 if you go before your class graduates. Phil? Bulkey?

UCONN stuck with Aubrey through injury and she is succeeding this year. Nika lives by emotion. The friendships and relationships will keep her in Storrs. Besides. She may get to start with Azzi and Paige. That's a pretty huge draw

They must turn 22 in the calendar year of the draft. Drafts happen in April, so they have another 8 months to have a birthday. A lot of juniors reach that age requirement these days

I actually see Muhl coming off the bench next season. It's not that she isn't a great pg, Geno is going to want Bueckers be the starting pg. It's what she dreamed of doing and that's where her genius is best displayed. And selfishly I want to watch her play pg live. It's going to be Bueckers, Fudd, Griffin, Edwards, XXX. I vote for a front court player being the 5th starter. Griffin's 3 ball will be a real weapon next season. Muhl can come in for Bueckers, Fudd or Griffin. But she will be the pg whenever she is in. And I qualify all this by saying that everyone else is eligible to make a leap up. A healthy Ducharme could easily take a starting spot. Her skills and talent level are grossly under-appreciated. Injuries put her under the radar and her old school attitude doesn't make for great highlights. But when healthy she can score 30 because her size gives her miss-matches inside and outside. She "made her bones" with me last year when she had to take over as the primary scorer and surprised a lot of people by playing like an AA as a freshman. It would say a lot about UConn's depth next year if the Lieberman Award winner didn't start.

I think on paper we are a better team next season with some question marks in the frontcourt. But maybe we will go smaller and start Aubrey at the 4. Our issue then would just be that we aren't a very big team.

Isn't there something about you are eligible if your class has graduated?

I have always thought that Nika was going to Europe to play professionally when she graduates. Never considered any other possibility.

Aaliyah Edwards - 6'3" Amari DeBerry - 6'5" Ayana Patterson - 6'2" Ice Brady - 6'3" Jana El Afy - 6'4" Maybe, just maybe there are some question marks. I don't see the issues. I will be interesting to see who starts in Dorka's spot. Fall practice will be very competative.

It's not impossible that they will start small with Aaliyah and Aubrey underneath, Paige and Azzi at the guard, and Nika at the point.
If they start that way, no one has to develop into a starter. Doesn't mean that Ice, Ayanna, Jana, or even Amari won't eventually (or sooner) work their way in and displace Aubrey, or that Aubrey and Azzi will stay at the shoulder and Paige displace Nika at point. But Aubrey's a beast around the net, and a seasoned Aubrey may initially be more effective than any of the others bigs.

But I think if we do initially have a small starting line-up, Aubrey is more explosive as the 4. One thing we haven't talked about is this. Assuming (massive assumption, we've learned) that the team is reasonably healthy next year, Geno might change his ways and not work his starters so hard. This comes at a time of a very deep bench and a need to give the bench bigs work. So starting might mean even less next year. I could see Paige and Azzi being put on a 25 minute tops clock, regardless of the game or score, effectively saving them for March, and giving KK and Ashlynn work.
