Shear Smokey & Vanquish the Volunteers!!!
The ‘Volunteers’ name derives from the 1,500 troops from Tennessee that fought under General Andrew Jackson against the British at the Battle of New Orleans during the War of 1812. That same Volunteer spirit carried on when the war of Texas Independence broke out in 1835. Again, men all over the great state of Tennessee took up arms to aid the Texans in their revolution against the Mexican Army. One such man was the legendary David "Davy" Crockett, a soldier and congressman from Greene County in East Tennessee. Crockett is the personification of the Volunteer name. So much so, he was the inspiration for the logo Tennessee athletics adopted in 1983. Like so many men who fought in that Texas campaign, Crockett paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to the cause. While the Tennessee football program started play in 1891, it was not until 1902xw following a 10-6 win over Georgia Tech that a writer for the Atlanta Journal Constitution called the team from Knoxville, the Volunteers. By 1905 the University had officially adopted the name. In 1953, the University of Tennessee Pep Club held a contest to select a coonhound, a breed common in Tennessee, to serve as the school's live mascot. Announcements of the contest in local newspapers read, "This can't be an ordinary hound. He must be a 'Houn' Dog' in the best sense of the word." Each dog was introduced over the loudspeaker, and the student body cheered for their favorite. "Blue Smokey" was the last hound introduced. When his name was called, he barked. The students cheered and Smokey threw his head back and howled again. This kept going until the stadium was in an uproar, and the University had found its mascot. "Blue Smokey" would compile a 10-10-1 record during his two seasons as Vols mascot.

Thread is surprisingly quiet considering the opponent...
How is everyone feeling? I am very calm at the moment. I really like our chances, but we know anything can happen. Sure wish we had Caroline available, but as long as everyone currently playing remains healthy and able to play, all is good.

Just a reminder...this is a REGULAR SEASON game, out of conference too. It isn't like if we lose, which I don't feel we will, the season is over. Nor is the quest for the BE regular season championship over.
I get that it is Tennessee and we don't ever want to lose, or even struggle to win, against them. But it is just a game among every other regular season game.
The only bad thing that will happen should we lose (again, I am not feeling a loss) is the Tennessee fans will become insufferable for a while.
Honestly, I will be more anxious about the South Carolina game.

Sure, the game has tradition.
But these are great kids. Expectations are different now with 4 supremely talented teammates sitting on the bench. I'm focusing on how each of the active players develops throughout the season, regardless of what happens before it does and when it will end.

So excited to have our warrior team who have shown us so much growth and heart!

Beating Tenn at TBA would confirm my opinion that the SEC is having a less than mediocre season. A double digit win would confirm my opinion of UConn. So while beating Tenn is not so much big deal any more to me the game is going to be a litmus test.

no matter the stakes, I want the Volunteers to be VANQUISHED!
our loyal band of intrepid ballers will mystify and confound the Volunteers until their hound howls for Jonathan the Husky to lead him from the blizzard of points raining down.
Decimation begins at 8 pm sharp!
