See, SEMPER; I told you Geno would be giving us chocolate and cookies soon. I had no idea it would be this soon though? We're gonna find out just how good she is real soon! Now we understand why Geno was dancing the game today.

People on TOB don't think she will play. Then some wondered if she could get a COVID year and play this year and then have 4 more. Thoughts?

This is interesting (FYI I can't see rukia's post, but I assume I know what ot says.) Jana El Alfy is on her way to UConn and will play this semester..... Very common these days. Both the programs I follow have an early enrollee. Both the Rutgers and Arizona folks are traveling and practicing with the team, but neither are active players. As I understand it, they will use up an entire year of eligibility if they play. The Arizona recruit was interviewed and after going against the 5th year folks on the roster in practice she is satisfied not to play, as she recognizes she needs a lot of work and strength gains. And as one of the higher ranked recruits, it is refreshing to hear. I recognize your situation isn't quite the same, but I do wonder about the eligibility?

How is Prosper doing at Notre Dame? Anyone paying attention to that? 🤔

People on TOB don't think she will play. Then some wondered if she could get a COVID year and play this year and then have 4 more. Thoughts? No Covid years out there. The "Covid year" basically said that playing the "Covid" year didn't count - it essentially didn't exist in terms of using eligibility. If you were not playing that season, it doesn't affect you. You still get to play 4 years in 5 years, except that season didn't exist so you actually are sort of getting to play 5 years in 6. There was a lot of discussion when someone who sat out that year didn't get an extra year. Because they still got to play 4 years in 5. That year just didn't count toward those numbers. Some played, she didn't.

So you think she will actually play? Saylor played. Why not Jana?

I am super excited by this news. We can sure use another player. Whether she plays this season or not, learning the offense and defense this season will pay dividends next season.
I wonder if Geno or CD reached out to see if she would be interested in enrolling early? Necessity is the mother of early enrolling.

So you think she will actually play? Saylor played. Why not Jana? It was a free year for Saylor; it's not for Jana. If she plays this semester, she can't play in the 2nd Sem of her senior year. Of course, that may not be a problem for Jana and her coach-dad. Maybe they figure she'll be ready for European pro ball with a couple of years of polish.

I think she might be fine with 3 1/2 years if she has a chance to contribute this year. Geno may not PLAN to use her, but circumstances may force him to do so. Regardless, if she is eligible, it is an extra body as an eligible scholarship player, even if she doesn’t play a second.

She can practice without penalty, right?

She can practice without penalty, right? I think that’s right. That would allow her to learn the offense a bit before next year.

As noted, she will be enrolled, so she is eligible ... permitted ... to play immediately. But, she and the coaching group can elect whether to spend her first year this season or next - aka using up her first of four playing years.

Of course I hope she becomes a valuable contributor this season but I am doubtful. UConn isn't even practicing a lot so when is El Alfy going to learn UConn's offense and/or defense? And this the time of year for the practices they do have to be slowed down because of her addition?
If she is enrolling to get a head start on her academics while working out with the team and getting individual instruction then I think it's a great idea. Four extra months to get stronger and more skilled could lead to her being a valuable contributor next season.

But as linkster notes, she probably wouldn't learn a lot from practice now. Hard to imagine she'd learn enough of the offense at this point.

She can make this a redshirt season, full participation in practice, but no game ... not even travel with them on UCONN's nickel.
