Look. Lexi Hull doesn’t belong on this team. She just had a season where she shot less than 19% from three point land and less than 27% overall. And this is a player that probably mostly played in the less stressful “garbage time” period of the games.
I have noticed this a lot with women’s basketball. The US federation is not always picking the best players. They are picking players they have an existing relationship with. If you were on a U-13 team and have made subsequent us teams.. you are set for life. Someone like Morrow from DePaul will never get a sniff. It is no way to run the program imo.

I missed whatever news you are reacting to. No idea.
As to the larger point, yes, USA rarely selects players that have not put their time in with previous USA teams. I understand there was at least one exception (if not more) on the most recent edition that won the WC.

Several years ago I read something from someone assoc. with USA. Could have been a coach or an administrator. They said that they were trying to establish a program that will take young talented players and teach them a style of basketball as they move through the system so that as the national team changes the new teammates would have the tools to contribute. They players also familiarize with each other.
I think is what has led to the problem you are talking about.

Finding really good US Players who are available and willing to compete can be difficult because school is in session, young WNBA Players are often about to head overseas to make some $$$$ and 3X3 isn't as valued as the Olympics or other 5 on 5 teams. Hull had a horrid season and Indiana did a terrible job drafting her so highly. Games begin Wednesday on the free Fiba YouTube Channel. www.usab.com/news-events/news/2022/10/3x3-u23-womens-world-cup-roster-announcement.aspx

Less conspiracy and more situation, as Ken notes.
Players who sign up for 3X3 are not also on the 5v5 team. So, say Steph and others who almost made that WC team would have already declined. During NCAA time, so no college players. Overseas commitments will eliminate even more. Scrap those with nagging injuries, too.
Overall, tough to line up the best players

In a distant parallel FIBA 3X3 Universe, Lexie Hull has been transformed or metamorphosed into Lexie 'the incredible' HullK and she leads all scorers? The USA is 4-0 and the HullK is becoming world-famous? Reality is stranger than fiction, somehow? www.fiba.basketball/3x3u23wc/2022/top-scorersUS vs Japan: www.usab.com/news-events/news/2022/10/united-states-advances-to-quarterfinals-at-2022-fiba-3x3-womens-world-cup.aspx

Yep. I saw she has been scoring well. I watched some of the Maddie Siegrist 3x3. And there really are a lot of different levels of competition when it comes to 3x3. Even if Hull was a mediocre to poor WNBA player last season; Mongolia doesn’t have anything like that. I would still suggest choosing better players when we go to a strong regional with teams like France in it.
And my premise hasn’t changed. Based on merit, she was a head scratching selection.

The US won the silver medal today; losing 21-18 to France in the final.
Lexie Hull was actually the leading scorer for the entire tournament and she played stifling defense, completely unlike her WNBA season. Veronica Burton played excellent defense, but needs to up her outside shooting.
N'Dea Jones and Emily Engstler both mostly stunk? Jones has been playing 3X3 ball for a few years, but she's so slow, misses most of her easy layups and she's really just BIG? Emily Engstler is new at 3X3 and she could be good, but she's not?? She missed so many defensive assignments, got warned a few times for arguing with the officials and had too many turnovers??? Engstler is too obtuse to understand that international officials won't allow the NCAA backtalk? It figures she was originally with Coach Q @ SyrEXCUSE before going to Louisville.
France played better team basketball and they stayed in the moment. A very close game lost primarily because you need more than 2 effective players in 3X3.........I hope USA Basketball jettisons Engstler and Jones; because a slow chair can defend better that Jones.
