Research funding is big business and can really propel a university presidential candidate over the finish line.

Research funding is big business and can really propel a university presidential candidate over the finish line. I'm sure it's an excellent choice. But from my limited contact with her, I don't think I've ever met a college president more impressive, more well-respected by her staff than Susan Herbst.

Read the letter from UConn announcing her permanent appointment. Sure she will do well, but the fact that they had a committee of 150 doing research, had a very wide list of applicants, narrowed it to 9 for interviews, then 2....> So much for an intense national search. I feel like I still live in Chicago. Or Boston, too,for that matter. Cause the fix was always in.

I feel like I still live in Chicago. Or Boston, too,for that matter. Cause the fix was always in. Not sure the fix was always in, exactly. But an insider, who's already done the job on a temporary basis, has the trust of the governing board and presidential staff already, is known to faculty on the committee...that homer has an enormous advantage. Effectively, unless a superstar unaccountably appeared on the horizon, it was her job to lose. Being a university president these days is a job I'd wish only on my worst enemy. If she turns out to be good, UConn is lucky (again).
