I'm of two minds about her cancelling the series. I tend to agree with BYU that, even if that had been a racist comment and a threat against the Duke volleyball player, it's something to work on, not walk away from. But I can see Dawn's side, too.
Apparently it'll cost the USC AD:

I think that social science and athletics should stay in their own lanes.

Apparently it'll cost the USC AD: With only half of one mind remaining... I think it does a giant disservice to everyone. In exchange for 5 minutes of "See? Racism" media coverage, it tells everyone that the best answer to bigotry is to run from it. Does anyone on earth think BYU has more racist students, fans, community members, players, coaches, etc. than SCar? How about the rest of the SEC? The country, even? Didn't we really just empower one jackass (assuming that it did happen despite BYU investigation results) to chase away this coach and team? What if every team with Black players and/or coaches withdrew? Who wins? If we want to stop the stupidity, we need to give regular people a chance to see good people of similar and dissimilar heritage regularly. We need more chances for that moron's friends to appreciate the class with which the Duke player handled the interviews afterward, when almost begged by the interviewer to crank up the outrage. Sadly, some of today's idiots will hold onto their ignorance until death. It is every person who hears one of those obnoxious voices who we have a chance to sway. Most ot them will make up their own minds. If all they see to counteract the BS is moral outrage, then they might just pick a side ... maybe the wrong one. If instead they see the quality and strength of character by the disparaged AND others who care, then we have an opportunity to stem the hatred instead of feeding it.

You described in far more articulate and nuanced words the way I was leaning. On the other hand, because I can't imagine what it's like growing up a black woman or imagine Dawn's personal history, I try to appreciate why she reacted as she did. But of course, lacking those facts and replacing them with my "imagination," I'm sliding down the slippery slope of moral relativism.....

I initially agreed with her hasty decision, but now I realize she would have been better off waiting for a reasonable investigation of the allegations? I think BYU did a good job of looking at the circumstances and, as best I can tell, the allegations weren't corroborated? Who knows?
