I was over at VolNation (because I don't have enough things torturing me right now) and I saw that Brooklyn Miles, freshman point guard, was arrested for an underage DUI. She was found passed out in a running car that was still in drive. Coach Harper suspended her for one game for disciplinary reasons.
I hope UT is working to get her the help she needs. And, that she is willing to accept the help. That is the biggest challenge with folks in this situation.
I am keeping her in my prayers. Whether this was a one time binge or a sign of a deeper problem, I pray she finds the strength and fortitude to work on the problem.

Being characterized as " she made a mistake" by some on the orange board. A mistake is wearing a brown sock and a blue one. Deliberately operating a multi ton lethal weapon while way beyond drunk is not a mistake. A one game suspension (if that is all she got) is way too lenient. That doesn't even qualify as a wrist slap. Harper must be more concerned about her roster than she is about her player. "The driver remained unresponsive after the vehicle struck the building and attempts by officers to wake her by knocking loudly on the windows. As an officer used a window punch to break the rear driver window, crawl into the vehicle and place it in park she remained asleep." She is lucky that no one was killed or injured.
Anyone wonder why UTenn has so much trouble with their players? From deep discount Wal Mart shopping, to getting busted for illegal drugs, to locker room brawls and now this?

Buff, you're absolutely right about "she made a mistake." At the very least, it was the worst decision in the world. She was lucky neither she nor anyone else got hurt--except maybe from the hangover.

Covered in depth at DD's blog Oops! Sorry, I haven't read DD's blog the last couple of days. This has been a challenging week from a personal and professional perspective. Forgive me, DD! I will simply say that this hits very close to home for me. We have no way of knowing just how deeply this young lady's problems run. Was it one time binge? Or does she have a larger issue with alcohol abuse and has just been incredibly lucky by not having an accident or even being stopped prior to now? How she and Tennessee moves forward depends on the answer to this question. I tend to agree that the one game suspension is too light. On the other hand, basketball is something that is incredibly important to her, and if she has an alcohol abuse disorder, taking something that important to her away before the legal process is concluded and further review of her mental and emotional state is concluded could send her into an deepening and self-destructive spiral. And that is something no one wants to see happen. Trust me. It is a delicate situation, and one that many people will strongly disagree with. Optics are bad, of course, with the NCAA tournament on the horizon. But I have to believe that there is a lot going on behind the scenes to determine the depth of her problem and find the right course of action. She may ultimately lose her scholarship and be dismissed from the team. This is ultimately up to her and the decisions she makes on how she moves forward as well as what the courts decide. I am sure this is not easy for anyone involved. If she has a deeper problem than a one time binge and bad decision (which, alcohol consumption impairs good decision making - duh), she needs to get help. University of Tennessee has the resources available to help her find the treatment if she is willing. She is extremely fortunate in this way. Many others have no such resources and treatment options are hard to find and harder to afford even if the individual is willing to go into treatment. And since I foresee this thread becoming a bit contentious, I am moving it to "Off Topic"

I also agree with the "made a mistake" characterization and the example you provided. This is much bigger than a mistake. It is incredibly serious, and all concerned should be treating it as such - from the AD, to Coach Harper, to her teammates, to her family but most of all from Brooklyn herself.
