okay, folks, she's accused, not convicted. Remember DT was accused of using in Turkey. She didn't, she doesn't and it took forever to clear her name.
Russia may well have just decided to "find" something in her luggage that wasn't there when BG packed it. Heaven help her.
I kinda doubt BG would be that stupid as to have CBD on her trying to get the h3ll out of Dodge. Hope she's gets home soon and safe.

I've seen the stories about "Well, now they can hold her hostage as a bargaining chip." Two problems with that. One, hardly anyone in the US even knows who Britney Griner is. Two, if that's the game they want to play, we've got about two dozen russian hockey players in the NHL, and EVERYONE in russia knows who they are. That hand is way too weak to play.

Was at a party yesterday and the discussion turned to Ukraine. I mentioned Griner's arrest and of the 8 adults present the only other that knew who she was was my wife.

This was quite unexpected.
I've heard on good authority that Ms Griner was wearing a typical Russian winter coat and fur hat so that she could blend into the mass of ordinary Russian women at the airport.
Anonymity ain't what it used to be.

Anonymity ain't what it used to be. To quote Marissa Tomei: "Oh yeah, you blend!". Just saying it would be hard for her to blend in Russia no matter what she's wearing. Anyway, I agree with huskyharper and would further add that I don't believe a word of anything the Russian government/state officials say at this point. I'll believe that she really was carrying CBD if she is back in the USA, not under duress, and freely admits it. But my opinion still doesn't change the fact that Ms. Griner is in big trouble right now whether it is of her own making or just because she was the most famous American that Russia could find at the airport.

Anyway, I agree with huskyharper and would further add that I don't believe a word of anything the Russian government/state officials say at this point. Well, from all reports they do have considerable experience with athletes using drugs. Seriously, in part because of the Russian/Olympics/drugs mess, I wouldn't put it past them to try to score a public relations coup by concocting a frame-up and Greiner, for a lot of reasons, would be an indictee who might not garner an immediate and widespread outpouring of sympathy and disbelief in this country. I'll believe that she really was carrying CBD if she is back in the USA, not under duress, and freely admits it. First of all she wasn't leaving, she was trying to enter the country, which I found strange . You would think that the WNBA would have pre counceling for players traveling to these countries.

Which confuses me, someone saw her name in a box score before the league shut down for an international competition. However, in the end, it is probably immaterial whither she was going and coming to / from.

An adult shouldn't need counseling about transporting illegal drugs into a foreign country.

I heard (?) that she was actually detained several (3 or 4) weeks ago, on her way in. Before the war started. two thoughts from me: 1. it was planted and they let her go to her team and play until 2. once the war started they decided to grab her and make her an example.
In any event, she's being detained now, whether or not she was playing. Why she didn't get out once they "found" the drug??? Already trapped there?

It is also possible she carried a product widely available across the US into a country where it is not allowed, and got caught with it. -She may not have known it is illegal there. -May have presumed it to be allowed for medical reasons. -Maybe she just thought she could get away with it - possibly because she had carried same in the past. None of these circumstances would certainly not preclude her being used as a political pawn, just would be a bit more "fault" on her part. Of course, planted is certainly possible, too. I wonder whether we'll ever know. The stories I read were not specific about the actual contraband nor the quantity. The charge was supposedly "Drug trafficking", which here means that there was a large quantity. No idea what that means in Russia. CBD - non-hallucinogenic supplement with many claims, one of which is pain management - is fully legal in the US and can be purchased in stores, online, even at nearly every farmers' market. Even "pot" for a vape, though generally illegal, is still widely available with prescription or by underground purchase. This one also has been the center of a spate of serious health concerns including permanent lung damage and sometimes death. Probably from less than rigorous production and/or packaging practices.
