Process, but we are ignorant without it? As a youngster, I recall the blocking of books like J D Salinger's "The Catcher in the Rye" and many my age became even more interested in that book; much to the chagrin of the thought police? Ironically, part of Salinger's intent in writing the novel was to convey the angst of mentoring younger siblings! You can't - and shouldn't - hide every bad thing in the world from them; or they'll never 'grow up'!!! Ah, but Tennessee knows best............. newsletters.theatlantic.com/deep-shtetl/61f2d85e9277230021adb432/the-good-news-about-the-holocaust-education-in-america/

pretty much unrelated to the point of your post, Ken, but Catcher in the Rye may be my "least-favorite" book I've ever read. Obviously, lots of folks think it's wunnerful, but, eh, not me!

According to what I read the issue was not teaching about the Holocaust just that the school chose the wrong vehicle. Opponents felt that the Maus was not appropriate for 8th graders. I think I agree but for a different reason. I think lessons about the Holocaust should use actual photographs of the event. Naked bodies in mass graves, pictures of skeletal survivors, the piles of jewelry and gold teeth. I think showing the actual inhumanity would be a more effective lesson. IMO a much more effective text - allthatsinteresting.com/holocaust-photos#1I semi read Catcher in the Rye as a teenager probably 60 years ago. As I dozed my way through it I kept wondering what all the fuss was about.

Don't know if it was my least favorite, but I didn't really see what was so great about it. I didn't read it until my 30's?? I think. But it seemed like something I could have written (I'm NOT a writer). Just ramblings off the top of someone's head with no point.
