I think that's the first time that I have heard whining about lack of a social atmosphere on campus from any player.

For most of her time @ UConn, Covid protocols put a damper on campus life and really everything!!

I'm not sure any campus would, or should, have a thriving social scene during a pandemic.

And we know during the season the focus for the team is on basketball, 24/7 outside of class time/acadmenics. Practice, strength training, individual work outs, study halls. And I am sure there are curfews and restrictions on how many "social events" (parties) they can attend. We know there is dress codes, no nail polish, etc. The players travel as a group, generally. I am not sure this will be much different at any other top program. Many top players are willing to give up some of the carefree ways of the regular college students who are not under the restrictions that are required of UConn players. We have heard past players say that playing for UConn you do sacrifice some of the social aspects of college life. For some people this is easier than for others. Especially if you have developed close friendships with your teammates. Maybe Saylor just didn't find anyone on the team she clicked with. It happens.
At least she realized it early before she became truly miserable. UConn is definitely not for everyone. If this part of college is important for her, she may be better off going to a program that is not top tier, or a lower division program.
I still wish her the best, finding a happy place for her college academic and basketball career.

I think that's the first time that I have heard whining about lack of a social atmosphere on campus from any player. COVID made it nearly impossible last year, and tough, even this year. That's certainly a factor. We also don't know what aspects of campus life are most important to Saylor ... or even what her image of campus life may look like. Finally, give her room to have the reasons that are shared and those that are not. I know someone who dropped out of Pre-Law as a top ten student before her final senior semester because her new boyfriend was already graduated and lived far away. She had the advantage of anonymity, whereas Poff's reasons make it to the papers and the internet, and into our posts. That's tough on a kid. Hopefully, she'll find a new situation that works for her in all ways.

How would any scholarship Div 1, top 5 team player, at UConn or otherwise find enough time to go out and "meet new people" between school, practice, travel, games, training, etc? Not buying into this mindset. Mommy didn't like her sitting the bench..I don't believe for a minute that this is a legit complaint that is serious enough to leave such a program. It's not for everyone, and I certainly get that, but nah....socializing as a reason to leave just sounds silly. And we all know that freshmen academics are a boring as hell anywhere. Not buying it for a hot minute.

I think that's the first time that I have heard whining about lack of a social atmosphere on campus from any player. That wasn't from "any player". Those quotes are from the player's mother. Correct. Most every comment came from her mother. My speculation? She has been on campus for nearly 2 semesters and has realized that she isn't as in love with basketball as much as she needs to be to endure the sacrifices that elite players have to make, especially with regards to their having a life away from basketball. I've read posts around boards that seem to assume that 17-18 year olds are expected to have a mature view of their life path and are always most concerned with their future life. It's true that elite level basketball rosters have a lot of athletes who fit that description. But the truth is that most people at that age are much more concerned with food, fun and sex. Poffenbarger miss-judged her commitment. I think the rash of injuries she has endured played a big role in her disillusionment. It's got to be tough to be on the sidelines doing rehab work while your team mates are on the court advancing their skills and teamwork as you fall further and further behind. Especially for a freshman. UConn isn't for everybody. Wish her good luck and successes in the future.

Yeah, where do kids go when they are hanging out in the portal? Do they get a new scholarship right away, but sit on the bench in the new place or what? I'm just curious as I don't understand it very well.

I'm not sure any campus would, or should, have a thriving social scene during a pandemic. Even outside of a pandemic...there is absolutely NOTHING to do in Storrs, CT. It is NOT the place to go for a buzzing extra curricular social life. Cows...for miles.

Saw a clip from CPTV that said Saylor had a local NIL deal. Can't put it here now. Maybe later.

I'm just curious as I don't understand it very well. We need to get input from former Syracuse Coach Quentin Hillsman in this regard, because he's the person most familiar with portalology?

I think the ship has sailed with Saylor heading to the open seas. Let's say we drop anchor on this topic and move along.

I wonder if she's burned out on basketball? Maybe she can hook up with a volley ball team.

We know what Saylor said and we know what her mother said. We don't know if what her mother said accurately represents Saylor's views. Has a parent ever made a statement that their daughter doesn't agree with ?
