So much is on TV about 9/11 right now, with pictures of the Trade Center.
I watched 9/11 from home (near Rutgers) - I was scheduled to complete an audit in southern NJ starting about noon. Ended up postponing.
My office was in NY, on 5th Avenue in the 50s. Even if I had been scheduled in the office, my commuter train left my local station 8:46, just when the first tower was hit (I changed trains in Newark and arrived in the city about 9:40 IIRC and my office between 10 and 10:15).
In any case, while I most often took NJ Transit into Penn Station, from time to time I would take the PATH train from Newark to the World Trade Center. Typically, I just went from the PATH to the subway, without going to street level, picking up some sweets on the way. Once in a while I would go up to the Concourse by the tower elevators for a different bakery. And even less often, I would take one of the enclosed bridges into one of the other World Trade complex buildings to pay my Amex Bill.
For those who were never to the WTC, I can simply say that there was no comparison to (for example) the PA Bus Terminal or even the Penn Station shopping level. It always seemed (largely) "clean". I'll never forget the huge array of escalators coming out of the lower level. And even the area near the elevators at street level seemed spectacular. Going to the other building was fantastic as well. Just a beautiful complex.
And one final thought - so after the towers came down and they reopened the PATH station I came in a couple times that way. You came out of the station and went up a long ramp from which you could view the huge hole. Construction was just beginning at the time. This was just the most amazing view.
If you ever have chance and haven't done it yet, go to the memorial / museum. We went a few years back when we came east to inter my mother's ashes. Ate at Katz's, FWIW. I don't exactly "miss" NY - we never did take much advantage of the amenities, but there is truly something special about the city.
