Now that there is little to ruminate on for a few months, I wonder what people here do in their spare time. For myself I have a Kubota tractor and have been using it the last couple of weeks to do some seriously overdue replantings. The deer were especially hungry this winter. btw who said they don't eat Rhododendrons? I also have several video cameras in the woods to record the various wildlife here. There is an active fox den about 30m from the house. I was sure the newborns were dead as I have recently captured 2 coyotes going in there. Turns out I was wrong Today they made their entrance to the world known. In this clip papa is bringing home a delicious breakfast meal. You can see the little ones after he delivers it. Very cool! Don't know if Chappy would want this as a separate thread or as part of the now somewhat slow, post-vaxx, daily check in thread. But besides my writing (which is accelerating now that classes are over), my real passion is film photography. So far, I've used the kids' bathroom as my darkroom. But a couple of them are threatening to stay with us this summer, so either I have to: 1. rent a Porta Potty in our backyard for them, 2. send film out for professional work, or 3. plumb my basement. I'm thinking either 2 or 3 is going to win with the family.

For the longest time I've wondered what it would have been like to have visited this continent 500+ years ago? Books and movies depicting the era and New England are great, but I want a damn time machine to go back there for real......where's my Delorean!! 'Changes in the Land'.....is one of my favorite books examining early New England: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Changes_in_the_Land

Bill Cronon originally wrote Changes as a graduate seminar paper!

What I want to do and what I need to do are very different things.
I want to do more reading, and find a hobby I can really enjoy. I used to do counted cross stitch a lifetime ago. I should pick that back up.
For the time being, we have a bit of a mouse problem so I am going to start cleaning out the basement where the critters may have made a home amongst all the clutter. Until I come across the first mouse, at which time the basement cleaning becomes the hubby’s chore. I have a completely irrational fear of those little boogers. I am literally the “woman standing on a chair screaming” type.

. . . But besides my writing (which is accelerating now that classes are over), my real passion is film photography. So far, I've used the kids' bathroom as my darkroom. . . Hmm too late I gave away my darkroom gear - included a 4X5 B&W enlarger, a Bessler 23C, several lenses and everything that goes into a darkroom - including the timer, chemicals and a load of paper. I almost got royally screwed by a local camera store on my film gear. I had all Nikon and in 2000 decided to switch to digital and Canon. I took all my 'stuff' to a camera store to see how much they would give me in trade towards new Canon lenses and a body. His offer? $300 I went on Ebay and sold it piecemeal for over $6K. An unused F2 finder (no meter) I found later brought in $600 - go figure.

1. Golf. 2. Golf 3. Golf . . . . 100. Golf Don't be quite so modest, here, DD: golf is my focal point too, but, it comes with lots of related benefits. Out here in New Mexico, I see ravens, lizards, coyotes, eagles...I see the change of seasons (the cottonwoods have just exploded in the last week). I see the snow retreating on the Sandias, the ground squirrels emerging from their burrows. Just this morning, a partner and I were discussing the clouds rolling in, both height and appearance pattern. A couple a' times per season, I have to remove a gopher snake to a safer location, and, twice, western diamondback rattlesnakes have checked in to make sure that my cardiac health was sound. Lots of migratory birds along the Rio Grande, lots of waterfowl in the water hazards. Golf ain't just golf!

I'll probably sell most soon. You'd be shocked at how rapidly film cameras--particularly medium format--are increasing in price. This is a boom time for film. You'd be sick to learn how much you'd get for your cameras now.

I got into cross stitching again a couple of years ago when a friend asked me to finish (ha--she had about 10% of it done) a project she was working on for a gift. Eighteen count black Aida cloth, lots of detail, metallic thread, top stitching, and charms. I figure I'll be at it for another couple of years, but I so look forward to working on it every day! But, like you, it's limited by what I have to do. Glad I don't have mice. Call an exterminator. Work overtime if you have to. Or get a nice cat.

A little over a week ago between the three of them they caught and killed (or mostly killed) four mice. In ONE evening! None since then. But you have to figure there are more...they just went into the rodent protection program.

I'm thinking either 2 or 3 is going to win with the family. My father had a dark room in the basement. He somehow got a sink that was like 7 or 8 feet long, which was very useful (he put trays of chemicals in the sink, then dumped them there). He had running water, but the drain had to be manually connected to a sewer drain in the floor of the basement.

I keep busy, somehow. Watch a lot of TV, my wife tapes and I watch with her. I like to read, play some computer games, hope to resume some more activity soon.
We are "half vaccinated" but are going to have our first (outside restaurant) meal with a fully vaccinated friend somewhere in the Phoenix area. Of course, we do want to be sure that they are following protocols, it makes us nervous, but I think is ok.

1. Golf. 2. Golf 3. Golf . . . . 100. Golf So sad. I've gone from 3 rounds a week to unable to swing a club in just the last few years. We are planning to make up for the pandemic limited travel this year, but golf clubs won't be in our luggage. We lost them in the fire and opted not to replace them.

Just going in to our busy season at work, so summer is not my leisure time. We are going to the Berkshires next weekend for our anniversary, and then off for our Spring Maine trip in Mid May for a week. After that, the work deluge. Hope to get out to see the family in Iowa now that all of us are fully vaxxed. Pining to go back to the UK, if Boris ever lets us in again. A week in Ireland would be pretty nice as well. Not to mention favorite nephew and family just relocated to the Netherlands for work... Oh well, car trips for now!
In terms of reading, I have been working my way back thru all of The John McPhee books in our shelves at home. Also Sarah Wheeler. Eying my Noel Perrin stash as well.
AS for wildlife, at work we have a fox den full of kits that are often spotted romping about. The Red Tail Hawks have re-established their nest and seem to be brooding. Guys at work are busy building an Osprey Habitat, so we have hopes for them as well. Have seen quite a few over the CT River. Maybe we can get some to do a relo.

We go to the Berks a lot, too. We might miss this year; really slow to emerge....First trip is likely California in October for a wedding.
